People in Question

There comes a time in genealogical work when you will hit a brick wall with your research. Whether it is due to a lack of information or a lack of available paper work, it can be hard to find out more about these individuals and their families. Below, I have listed names and known information about individuals that I am having trouble finding information for. If you have any information on these people or know where I can find more info on them, please comment.

Diganzi, Giovannina: Also known as Jennie. Born about 1893 in Italy and married Dominic Cusanza in New Orleans, Louisiana on 11 February 1915. Died in 1968, and was buried in Saint Vincent De Paul Cemetery in New Orleans. 1930 census places Giovannina, Dominic and their children in the city of New Orleans.

Dinapoli, Catterina: Married to Gaspare Reina. Died in New Orleans, Louisiana possibly between 1920-1935.

Hay, Katherine: Born about 1878 in Kentucky. Married Fredrick Sanders. Name retrieved from the marriage record for her daughter, Hazel Sanders.

Hogan, Francis Blake: Born aroun 1861 in Kentucky. Married Benjamin J. Blair on 6 September 1877 in Hart County, Kentucky. Died before 1900 (she does not appear in the census with her family). Last name may also be Hagan.

  • Information Desired: Parents, Death Date and Location, Burial Location

Lampo, Calogera: Born around 1862 in Italy and married Antonio Tessitore in about 1881. 1900 census puts Tony, Carry and their children (connected via Maria Tessitore) in New Orleans, Louisiana. Later census records have her listed as Carolina. Maiden name could be Lampo, Kampo, Lambo or Kambo.

Reina, Gaspare: Married to Catterina Dinapoli. Died in New Orleans, Louisiana possibly between 1920 and 1940.

Salvaggio, Louis: Born in New Orleans, Louisiana in the late 1800s (probably between 1880 and 1895).

Tessitore, Antonio: Probably born January 1854 in Italy and was marred to a woman named Carry around 1881. Naturalization card for Tony Tessitore exists from New Orleans, Louisiana. 1900 census puts Tony, Carry and their children in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Venezia, Guiseppe: Also known as Joseph. Born about 1890 in Italy and married Maria Tessitore in 1914 in New Orleans, Louisiana (from Louisiana Secretary of State website).

  1. So is there a story behind what brought Italians to New Orleans? Was there an Italian community there or was this just happenstance for these individuals? That would seem sort of unusual for turn of the century immigrants to go out on their own where there wasn't a like community.
    I've never thought of New Orleans as having an Italian presence, so now I'm curious about that.
